Utrecht University Psychology Entry Requirements

This program is limited to a maximum of 150 registrations. Only students who meet the admission requirements will be considered for admission. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, the Admissions Committee will select only the most suitable candidates. If you have a first-year degree from a university of applied sciences (“Hogeschool”), the entry requirement is mathematical A or B at VWO level. At the Intermediate 200 level, a series of special “state-of-the-art” thematic courses are offered, allowing students to learn and experience what types of discoveries have contributed to our overall understanding of human behavior. Social Psychology (PSY21) teaches students about social relationships: the influence that individuals and groups have on each other. Students will be selected for their understanding of fundamental paradigms in social psychology, but will also have “practical” experience in research.

Developmental psychology (PSY22) deals with psychological changes that occur over the course of life, such as learning processes and identity formation. In clinical psychology (PSY23), students learn the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal behaviors. In Intercultural Psychology (PSY27), emphasis is placed on comparative research; By studying psychological behavior as it occurs in different cultural contexts, we learn about basic human nature. Finally, the psychology of learning and teaching (PSY28) introduces students to educational sciences. At the 200 level, project work is an important part of assessment in addition to exams. UCSSCPSY37: Health Psychology This course provides an in-depth study of current research in health psychology: the study of health problems arising from the dynamic interaction of biological, psychological, social and cultural factors. We will examine health psychology on a continuum: pathology on the one hand, robust physical and mental health on the other.

We will cover a range of topics, including theoretical approaches to health psychology, the role of mental health in physical health, the physiological basis of stress, eating disorders, the problem of pain, health diversity issues, and placebo effects. We will apply theory to practice and require critical thinking to evaluate health psychology issues. We will examine the relationship between culture and health, cultural constructs of health and disease, and how this affects the doctor-patient relationship, diagnosis, communication, and adherence. All psychology courses are, of course, related to the skills courses offered in the ACC department: MET11 and MET21 are prerequisites for psychology courses at different levels, and the PSY25 internship is often used as part of a minor in statistics. Equally important is the link with the various disciplines offered in the University College Utrecht program. Cognitive neuroscience (SCI) and linguistics (HUM) are examples of fields that combine the will of individual students with an interest in psychology. After submitting your application, the admissions office will check if you have submitted all the required documents and if your application is indeed complete. If so, we will check if your degree is equivalent to a Dutch VWO diploma and if you meet the professional requirements. Within 3 weeks of receiving your complete application, you will receive the official admission letter. At University College Utrecht, we are looking for intellectually adventurous students who demonstrate success and commitment inside and outside the classroom. We receive about 1,000 applications and about 250 students register each year. To be accepted, applicants must meet a general profile and meet a set of minimum requirements regarding their degree and proficiency in English.

In the Netherlands, only the Dutch VWO diploma provides direct access to higher education. If you have a foreign high school diploma, international student admissions must determine whether you can be admitted to university. UCSSCPSY27: Intercultural Psychology Intercultural psychology studies what is fundamental to human nature and what differs according to people`s cultures. It critically assesses the universality of knowledge of mainstream psychology and covers a wide range of topics. Applicants must have a Dutch baccalaureate at VWO level (any profile) or foreign equivalent and meet the entry requirements. You can check if your diploma meets this requirement in the Abitur list. This course provides students with a solid foundation for learning research and its applications.

We will explore different theories of learning (e.g. behavioral, cognitive, social and constructivist), brain architecture, developmental aspects and research on interest, motivation and self-regulation. About half of the course will be devoted to this: learner psychology. UCSSCPSY11: Introduction to Psychology This course covers psychology as a science and profession, with an emphasis on scientific theories, empirical research, and their applications. We begin by developing psychology as a discipline dedicated to answering age-old questions about human nature and behavior. We cover the traditional areas of psychology, including biological psychology, sensation and perception, learning and motivation, cognition, emotions, child development, personality, psychopathology, psychotherapy, social psychology and applied psychology. This master`s program is selective and does not offer a pre-master`s program for students who do not meet the admission requirements. UCSSCPSY23: Clinical Psychology The course delves into the field of psychology that deals with the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of abnormal behaviors or mental disorders.
