World Bank Legal Internship Program

Health Insurance: World Bank Law Interns are responsible for their own health insurance and all costs resulting from accidents and/or illnesses during the internship, and must provide proof of valid global health insurance coverage. The Junior Professional Associate (JPA) program is a unique opportunity to gain work experience and engage directly with the challenges – and rewards – of international development. To be eligible for an internship, applicants must hold a bachelor`s degree and be enrolled in a full-time graduate program (a master`s or doctoral degree with the intention of returning to full-time studies). There is no age limit. The goal of the program is to provide you with first-hand experience of the World Bank`s day-to-day operations by working closely with the staff of the Legal Vice Presidency. As a member of our team, working directly with exceptional and inspiring development experts and senior executives, you will have the opportunity to contribute to Legal Vice Presidency`s legal services and attend high-level events and conferences held during your articling period. Applicants must also hold or be able to obtain an F1 or G4 visa, or be U.S. citizens or residents (green card holders) and be able to cover travel, accommodation, and living expenses in Washington, DC. In addition, ICSID recommends that selected interns purchase health insurance for the duration of the internship. Eligible applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program. They must also be able to provide written confirmation that they: (i) will receive academic credits for at least one semester/semester in a degree program; or (ii) receive a scholarship from their university for the duration of the internship. Jobs can be located at one of the World Bank`s offices around the world.

Up to six internships are offered every four months, for a period of at least 12 weeks and at least 10 hours of work per week. The internship periods are September-December, January-April and May-August. Internships will take place at the Center`s headquarters in Washington, D.C. (unless travel restrictions are in place due to COVID). J1 visa holders must obtain a G4 visa abroad before starting an unpaid job or internship at WB. Fluency in English is required. Language skills such as: French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese and Chinese are desirable. Other skills, such as computer skills, are an advantage. Interns are unpaid, but receive academic credits for their work after successfully completing the internship or are supported by the university in which they are enrolled. Achievements are directly related to the scope of work listed in the agreed job descriptions at the beginning of the internship. Academic credits are awarded at the end of the semester after approval by the ICSID supervisor. Your academic results are higher and place you at the top of your graduating class. Fall Internship Program: The application period begins April 1 and ends April 30 (the proposed internship period is 10 to 12 weeks, usually between September and November, depending on the prevailing need). This is an excellent opportunity for students who wish to gain work experience at the World Bank during the academic year in the form of internships while enrolled in a full-time law program, or for those enrolled in part-time and/or evening law programs. Under U.S. Department of Homeland Security rules, students who are eligible to participate in the OPT prior to graduation may work part-time (20 hours or less per week) during school hours. Finally, applicants must meet their university`s requirements for an internship (as these may vary, students are encouraged to obtain confirmation from the university that they are eligible for a specific internship period before applying). Since this employment program is highly competitive, candidates who are actively considered for employment may be asked to submit academic records as well as references. The World Bank only contacts candidates who wish to interview hiring managers. ICSID offers unpaid internship opportunities to graduate students who are eligible and qualified for an internship (sometimes called external) in accordance with its academic regulations and World Bank Group requirements (see below). The main objective of the internships is to provide students interested in international investment dispute settlement and international investment law with a better understanding of ICSID`s work, enhance their academic and professional goals, and contribute to ICSID`s mission.

Costs: The World Bank does not reimburse participants in the World Bank`s Legal Internship Program in the form of cash fees or compensation. However, each World Bank lawyer shall be compensated in accordance with World Bank Group policies and standards in the form of (i) monetary fees/compensation paid by the University or another sponsoring organization acceptable to the Bank; or (ii) academic credits in accordance with the Bank`s fee schedule. Therefore, students participating in the World Bank`s Legal Internship Program should secure appropriate sources of funding for the duration of their internship.
