Cynthia studied at the University of Illinois, Arizona State University, and the University of Arizona, where she earned a BLA (Bachelor of Landscape Architecture). Although she was registered as a landscape architect in Arizona and New Mexico, she rarely practiced this art in the traditional sense, preferring to focus on land use planning and legal issues of land use planning. Cynthia was Regional Director of Planning and Landscape Architecture at a large U.S. firm, and then a partner in two firms, one of which was a firm specializing in civil engineering, land use planning and surveying. She has served on numerous boards, homeowners` associations, professional associations and voluntary organizations such as the Audubon chapters. After traveling extensively, she volunteered to teach two levels of birdwatching classes for Sun City Grand and the Desert Botanical Garden, both in the Phoenix, Arizona area. A long love of nature led him to take an interest in ecology, bird watching, hiking, traveling, and exploring different cultures. Having lived in Virginia, Kansas, Germany, Illinois, Arizona and now Oregon, she is enjoying new experiences and meeting new friends. She currently lives in South Salem with 7 parrots. Steve is a long-time nature and wildlife lover, as well as an amateur nature photographer and birdwatcher. In 2016, he retired after a 33-year career at Boeing, where he designed control electronics for satellites and other spacecraft. After retiring, Steve moved to Corvallis to be closer to the natural spaces he loves. He spent countless hours wandering around Finley, Ankeny and Baskett Slough, enjoying the scenery and taking photos. He joined Friends to help protect and present these wonderful natural places, both for wildlife and the people who visit them. In addition to photography and bird watching, Steve enjoys biking and hiking in the many beautiful places Oregon has to offer. Jill recently retired after a 28-year career with the Oregon Department of Transportation, where she managed the budget, finance and federal grants for the Technical Services Branch. She recently became an Oregon Master Naturalist, focusing on the Willamette Valley ecoregion.
She is also a master gardener of Oregon and master recycler of Marion County. Jill holds a BS in Arts from Oregon State University and a BS in Psychology from Portland State University. She is an animal lover and has a beagle named Toby and a tabby cat named Kiki. Jill was born and raised in Oregon and enjoys traveling, reading and oil painting. She enjoys hiking, exploring Oregon`s vast, varied region, and studying the geology of the area. Rebecca is currently a member of the Springfield Community Development Advisory Committee and is involved here at home in the Willamette Valley. She works at Oregon State University, where she works in plant operations and maintenance management. One of their responsibilities is to create a more sustainable university community.
As rector of Trinity Church in Branford, a historic congregation in the heart of the city, she led the congregation through the transition to an understanding of abundance and stewardship as a way of life, brought Trinity deeper into the life of the Branford community, organized social justice activities, and oversaw a $2 million fundraising campaign to renovate the historic buildings. In 2020, she completed a master`s degree in environment and community at Cal Poly Humboldt. During her thesis, she gained experience in collaborative community development and understood how community groups can achieve their goals. During this time, she also worked for a non-profit organization in the Pacific Northwest to recruit new members, engage community partners, and promote the organization`s goals of creating equity, equality, diversity, and inclusion in outdoor spaces. She also has experience creating a quarterly newsletter for this organization. Lisa has been teaching science for 26 years. She taught A.P. Environmental Science for 21 years and traveled extensively with students to conduct field studies.
She conducted an annual four-day field study in Yosemite National Park for her AP students for 20 years. Lisa recently retired and moved to Oregon with her husband of 38 years and they settled in Corvallis. Lisa has degrees in Environmental and Systematic Biology and has been actively involved in curriculum development for the San Onofre Parks Foundation and the Crystal Cove Alliance. Lisa strives to pursue her passion for teaching sustainability and responsibility. She was responsible for education for the San Onofre Parks Foundation Board of Directors for three years and they were instrumental in extending the lease of the San Mateo Creek and San Onofre cliffs to protect sensitive habitat. Lisa wrote a field study program for the foundation to educate biology students about the sensitivity of flora and fauna in her area. She wants to continue working with a dedicated group of people to preserve sensitive habitats in the Willamette Valley. Sharon graduated from Indiana University and received her Master of Divinity degree from Seabury Western Theological Seminary in 2000. Since her ordination, she has served in Bloomfield Hills, MI; Paris, France; Laguna Niguel (Orange County), CA, and most recently Branford, CT. Anne`s experience includes 40+ years of work in federal, state, local and tribal government agencies and non-profit organizations. Much of his work has focused on programs for disadvantaged individuals or communities. Anne spent the last 10 years of her career at OSU, coordinating programs and providing administrative support for educational initiatives.
In addition to her training (Master of Public Administration, Bachelor of Community Organization), this experience allowed her to develop skills useful in various organizational environments, including planning and program management. Specific skills include needs analysis, survey research, budgeting, grant writing and management, volunteer recruitment and management, database management, newsletter preparation and program evaluation. In addition to her job, she has been an active volunteer throughout her adult life. This includes participation in various bodies and committees, for example: the Linn Benton Housing Authority and, more recently, the Albany Regional Museum Policy Committee. In addition to working on committees, she recently completed her volunteer work as a court-appointed supervisor for legal guardians and their protégés. Anne hopes her background can complement the friends` efforts to promote awareness and appreciation of the shelter complex. Anne still has a love of the outdoors and grateful recognition after years of hiking, climbing, canoeing and birdwatching in the Pacific Northwest. There are several vacancies on our Board of Directors. And there`s no better time to get more involved! Rebecca has volunteered for various non-profit organizations and habitat restoration projects since childhood.
