[27] Carlo Santos of Anime News Network criticized the series for its “ordinary” plot and “ridiculous” characters, calling it “underdeveloped,” but said the series is “crazy and crazy enough to be entertaining at times.” Santos also criticised the “sloppy” illustrations, repetitive fights and English dubbing, concluding: “Like its titular hero, The Law of Ueki looks energetic and promising, but at the moment it lacks the self-control to succeed. [43] Chris Beveridge of AnimeOnDVD commented that the series is “really a hard sell,” commented that the characters are hard to connect, the pace of the first few episodes is very fast, and its plot “something we`ve now seen millions of times in its most basic form.” Beveridge also criticized the show`s artwork, which combines traditional and digital animation, calling it “sometimes separate” and resembling an “unfinished show.” [44] IGN`s Jeremy Mullin compared the show`s premise to Zatch Bell! and commented that the characters` powers are similar to those of Fullmetal Alchemist, “with the conversion factor”, which also highlights the variety of ways in which they are used. Mullin concluded, “Ueki`s Law was something I wanted to try, and it seems worth it. It`s full of old-fashioned anime craziness with some positive messages for good measure. [2] The anime was originally licensed from Geneon Entertainment. [28] Geneon released the first 36 episodes of the series on nine DVDs.[29] The first volume was released on May 16, 2006,[30] and the last volume on September 18, 2007. [31] ImaginAsian TV aired the animated series to the American public on its EnerG block beginning January 30, 2007. [32] The 3. In July 2008, Geneon and Funimation announced an agreement to distribute certain titles in North America. While Geneon would retain the license, Funimation would take over the exclusive rights to produce, market, sell and distribute the selected titles. Ueki`s Law was one of the many titles involved in the deal.

[33] Funimation released the entire series on a DVD box set on June 9, 2009. [34] The rights to the series expired in 2011. [35] In May 2018, Discotek Media announced the acquisition of the series. [36] It was released on Blu-ray disc on July 31, 2018. [37] [38] The series was added to the Crunchyroll catalog in May 2021. [39] Each of the 100 candidates for the king (candidates of God in the Japanese version) must choose a college student to act as an experienced user. The student is given a unique power and is tasked with eliminating as many enemies as possible. The victorious king candidate becomes the new king of the celestial world and the victorious student receives the empty talent (Black Zai in the Japanese version), a talent that can be anything he wants. Two years after the tournament at The Law of Uek, Kosuke Ueki is now a 3rd year student at Hinokuni High School. For some reason, everyone in the real world has lost the memory of their most important person, including their friends who participated in the tournament two years ago.

Ueki is the only one who is not affected and struggles to restore everyone`s memories. He follows a small sheep named U-lu to another world called Hangekai, where he meets new companions and gains new abilities. The story begins with the Battle of Supernatural Powers, a tournament that decides which celestial (celestial being in the original Japanese version) will be the next king of the celestial world (God in the Japanese version). [3] Luke Carroll of Anime News Network noted the first volume a B−. Carroll praised the concept of Ueki`s power to turn trash into trees and the show`s humor, but called it “another Run of the Mill Shounen title.” He described Fukuchi`s art style as “simple” and compared it to One Piece, as “there`s blur in many details,” but said it matched the comedic tone of the story. [40] Michael Aronson of Manga Life classified the first volume as C+. He criticized the series for its premise similar to other action manga series and for its “overly hyperactive” characters. Aronson closed; “Fans of hyper-action series – like One Piece and Dragon Ball – will feel right at home here. Everyone else will just ice over and over again. [41] Patti Martinson of Sequential Tart gave a 4/10 for the fourth volume. Comparing the content of the tape to the anime adaptation, Martinson wrote, “Sometimes the manga made less sense than the DVD. The characterizations seem to be a bit better, though, but not enough to see what happens in the next volume. [42] Although this leads many students to think about greed and selfishness, Kosuke Ueki decides to take it upon himself to win this tournament in order to keep this power away from those who would abuse such a gift.

The Law of Ueki was also adapted into a PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance game that was only released in Japan. The PlayStation 2 game is called Ueki no Hōsoku: Taosu ze Roberuto Jūdan!! (Loi de Ueki : Vaincre Roberto Ten Troupes!) while the Game Boy Advance game is called Ueki no Hōsoku: Jingi Sakuretu! Nōryokusha Battle (Ueki no Law: Divine Weapon Explosion! They are based on the history of the anime.
